A cozy, practical guide on how to recover from the flu after my experience with Influenza A over the Christmas holiday.
Catching the flu during the holidays is never part of the plan. Between family get-togethers, Nutcracker performances, business networking parties, and the hope of starting the new year refreshed, being sick can feel especially discouraging.
This past Christmas, I came down with Influenza A, and the first few days were incredibly difficult (especially Day 2). I had an intense sore throat, deep body aches, and overwhelming fatigue. Day 2 had me bedridden. My body felt like I had been hit by a train. I was uncomfortable and exhausted, and it was honestly a little scary not being able to simply get out of bed to grab water. After going in and out of consciousness several times, I had to muster all my strength to barely make it down to my kitchen for a bottle of water and come back up the stairs to my bed.
Thankfully, with plenty of rest and a few comforting essentials, I began to feel better faster than I expected. Below are the items that truly helped me recover from the flu and feel supported during the worst days of it.
A Quick Disclaimer
This post reflects my personal experience recovering from Influenza A and is not medical advice. Always consult a healthcare professional for diagnosis, treatment, and medication guidance, especially if symptoms worsen or persist.
Common Flu Symptoms to Watch Out For
The flu often comes on quickly and can feel much more intense than a typical cold. Common symptoms include:
- Fever and chills
- Severe body aches
- Extreme fatique
- Sore throat
- Headache
- Cough or congestion
I was experiencing all of these symptoms, so rest and supportive care were essential.
An additional symptom I want to mention is that I did experience a lack of taste around day 4 or 5. I’m not sure if I had lost my sense of taste earlier than that, since I was eating bland foods anyway, like oatmeal or rice congee. However, when I tried a spicy Arrabbiata tomato sauce later in the week, I couldn’t taste it.
Cozy Essentials That Helped Me Recover from the Flu
These are the items I reached for repeatedly while recovering. Simple comforts made a noticeable difference in my recovery!
Electric Kettle to Heat Water

An electric kettle became one of my most-used items while I was sick. With very little energy, being able to quickly heat water for tea or flu relief drinks was incredibly helpful. This is the exact one I have from the Beautiful brand in Lavender.
Warm beverages soothed my throat and helped me stay hydrated, which is especially important when recovering from the flu.
Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat Tea is My Holy Grail

This tea was a lifesaver for my sore throat! The blend is designed to coat and soothe, and I felt real relief after drinking it—especially during the first few painful days. This is my holy grail of throat relief tea. I found myself making multiple cups a day, especially in the evenings when my throat felt most irritated. Adding a little honey is especially good!
Theraflu to the Rescue

Theraflu helped me ease my symptoms, particularly at night. It made it easier to relax and rest, which is when your body does the most healing. Having something warm and calming before bed helped me sleep more comfortably through the worst of the flu, especially as it helped me breathe too.
Vitamin C to Help You Recover from the Flu

No matter if you’re sick or you’re healthy, Vitamin C is a great addition to any routine. While it isn’t a cure, it can support your immune system during recovery. I really like these ones from LEMONA, and they come in a cute heart-shaped tin you can use for storage!
An Electric Blanket is a Must

An electric blanket was incredibly soothing, especially during fever chills and muscle aches. The gentle warmth helped me relax and feel comfortable while resting. It became a staple for both daytime naps and nighttime sleep.
Fuzzy Socks for Additional Warmth

Warm feet make a surprising difference when you’re not feeling well. Fuzzy socks kept me comfortable and cozy, especially when I couldn’t regulate my body temperature. They’re a small comfort, but one I wouldn’t skip. I recommend the ones with grips on the bottom to prevent slipping.
Cute Mugs for a Mood Boost

This might seem totally unnecessary—I get it, but having a cute, cozy, comforting mug, drinking tea, and Theraflu makes it that much more bearable and something to look forward to! Drinking from a mug I loved made the experience feel calmer and more intentional. It was like treating myself rather than just downing whatever drink I needed to get through the day.
Tips to Recover from the Flu Faster
Based on my experience, these gentle habits made a difference:
- Prioritize rest, even when you start to feel better
- Drink warm fluids throughout the day
- Use medication responsibly to manage fever and pain
- Eat soft, nourishing foods
- Keep your environment warm and comfortable
Healing takes time, and allowing yourself to slow down is part of the process. When your body gets sick, it’s its own way of telling you to take some time to rest!!!
Final Thoughts on How to Recover from the Flu
Getting the flu over the holidays can feel isolating, but creating a warm, comforting environment can make recovery feel more manageable. These simple products helped me feel supported during a difficult week, and I hope they can do the same for you if you’re feeling under the weather.
Rest well, take care of yourself, and give your body the time it needs to heal. 💜
